AARP offers free tax help

Federal and California state income tax assistance will be provided again this year for seniors and low-income tax payers. Appointments will be required.

For appointments at the YMCA Simpson Center, Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, and Trinity Lutheran Church, call 929-9622.

For appointments at San Jacinto Senior Center, call 654-7212. In Beaumont/Banning, call 769-8539.

Bring last year's tax return plus all W-2's, SSA-1099, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-R forms and any other forms which must be included in 2011 tax returns.

Anyone itemizing deductions must bring both property tax bills.

 

Green Coalition to discuss water quality

The Green Coalition of the San Jacinto Valley will host a roundtable discussion entitled "The State of the San Jacinto Valley Aquifer: Is our water safe to drink?" on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church located at 200 E. Acacia Ave in Hemet.

The discussion will follow the regular general meeting of the Green Coalition. Ken Marshall and Peter Odencrans from EMWD's water quality lab will lead the discussion covering recent charges against the quality of drinking water as well as water level trends of the aquifer.

American Legion veteran fundraiser

The American Legion Auxiliary will host a fundraiser for veterans by having a bunco gathering. It will be held at Foothills of Hemet Mobile Home Park at 1 p.m. Feb. 19.

Cost is $10. 50 percent will be given back to the players. Light refreshment will be served. For more information, call 282-9938.

 

Hemet District collecting used shoes

Hemet Unified School District's S.A.F.E After School Program has partnered with Green Sneakers of Southern California to earn money for four high school scholarships.

During this fundraiser, HUSD schools will be holding a used tennis shoe drive. The Green Sneakers fundraiser has started and will continue through Feb. 17.

S.A.F.E. will earn $1 for each pair of sneakers that are collected and those funds will be placed into scholarships for one current high school senior at each high school in the district. Donations of sneakers can be made by dropping them off in the collection bin at a local school. You may also donate at Valley Wide Recreation and Park District in San Jacinto, Valle Vista Community Center, and at Hemet and San Jacinto PAL facilities. Sage Society to meet

The Sage Society will have their next meeting from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Simpson Center located at 305 E. Devonshire Avenue in Hemet.

The speaker will be Nancy Hippert who will discuss the "History of Food." Refreshments will be served.
